Why We Help: How do you write a story about a life that has only begun? How can you possibly tell all that has happened and that is going to happen to a wonderful fifteen year old young lady? I am not sure how to do this, but her story needs to be told and shared with everyone. Her name is Brittanee LeeAnn Baade. Fifteen years ago in a hospital in Clinton, Oklahoma she was born to Scott Baade and Koye Wagstaff Baade. Just a few short hours after her birth she was medi-flighted to Oklahoma City to Children’s Memorial Hospital. She was born with a bi-lateral cleft palate, lip, and an Omphalocele and we had no idea what else might be “wrong”. Over the years she has had surgeries to close her cleft lip and palate, surgeries on her urethra tubes, kidneys, and that is only to name a few things. All in all she has had thirty plus surgeries.

Unique, one of a kind, those are only a few of the words doctors have used to describe her and her medical problems. If you met her you would agree. She knows she is sick, but she doesn't let sick slow her down. She loves to cheer, drive her golf cart at her Grandpa’s, and she has run Cross Country and Track. When she ran, she always finished, no matter what. She doesn't let anything slow her down. Her smile can light up a room and when she laughs it is infectious and you can't help but laugh too, even when there is nothing funny. She loves her family, her dog Angel, and she loves life. Within the last year her young life has been filled with many tests and doctor visits to try and find out why the whites in her eyes were turning yellow and why she was tired a lot more than usual. Test after test was ran only to be told that nothing could be found other than elevated liver enzymes. This continued for what seemed like a very long time, until about 3 months ago when things changed. Her body started showing other symptoms and the doctor informed her family that she was in liver failure. She has since been referred to a wonderful group of doctors. Finally, her family was getting some answers, hard as they may be; at least they knew what was going on in her body. She was diagnosed with Calories’ Disease which is what is causing her liver failure. She also has polycystic kidney disease, causing her kidneys to decrease their function.

Their options had been narrowed down to one; she has to have a double transplant. She will have to undergo a liver and kidney transplant surgery at the same time. Think about it, not just one new organ, but two and all at the same time. There are a lot of factors the family must think about, one of which is cost.

This is why we help.
